Am I a member yet?

I registered to become a member of RWA back around Thanksgiving. I received my confirmation email on December 7. A day of infamy indeed. I thought, here we go. I'm on my way.

And then, nothing. No emails. No mailings. No new member packets. Nada.

I felt a little bit rejected. They accepted my check, but wouldn't keep up their end of the bargain. It's like the guy who, after a very pleasant date, says he'll call, but doesn't.

All of my FF friends kept mentioning the new RWR and the valuable information therein. I had no idea what they were talking about. I could understand if I didn't get anything during December, maybe. But not during all of January.

So come February 5, I broke down and called the RWA headquarters to find out what the deal was. Why wasn't I one of the cool kids now?

The poor girl I spoke to was having a rough day. She kept hacking into the phone. She said the computer systems had been down off and on all day. And she said it was her first day on the job.

However, she did promise to send me my new members packet, and that I should get it in the next week. I still feel a little ripped off about the last two months, but there's nothing really to be done about it. But I'd like to offer my heartfelt thanks to a very nice lady named Aronika, who made the whole encounter a lot easier than it could have been.

I can't help but wonder if my RWRs had been sent, where did they go? Is someone at the post office a closet romance novelist? Does someone want the benefits without having to pay their dues? Is someone just messing with me?

And does that someone know that it's a federal crime to tamper with my mail?

First things first, big congrats on winning the last round at Forever Fanlit for your story Washed Up (I hope I got the title right).

There, now on to your RWA woes. I would ask for those back copies of RWRs. I really find those so informative. The website is great too. It's so wonderful that you can pretty much get most of your info online. I embrace you technology!

They should add two months to your membership to make up for the slip. It was their fault, not yours.

I'm trying to save up the money to join -- unfortunately, I keep wanting to buy books! (ARGH!) -- but one of my friends set me up with about 2 months worth of reading in exchange for watching her cats while she's on vacation. So, I'm hoping that the first of March, I, too, can become one of the cool kids!

I want in! There are so many benefits to becoming a member and I can't wait until I can add my name to the membership list.

I would definitely ask for back issues.
